Christian Marriage Intensive After Infidelity: What to Look For

Hasani Pettiford and Roland Bradley of Couples Academy discussing infidelity in the church and marriage intensives

In short: Couples of faith often wait the longest to ask for help, because they are protecting a ministry, an image or a spouse. What you need after an affair is a safe, confidential space, someone who specializes in infidelity, and help that respects your faith without preaching at you. That is how we work with Christian couples, and with couples of every faith or none.

Watch: Infidelity in the Church (Hasani Pettiford with Roland Bradley)

Key takeaways

  • Being in church doesn’t protect a marriage from betrayal, and it doesn’t mean you have to suffer in silence.
  • Many church couples wait years, protecting a spouse’s image, until they reach a breaking point.
  • The first thing you need is a safe, confidential space where you can be fully honest.
  • Look for help that respects your faith without turning sessions into a sermon.
  • Recovery means rebuilding the marriage on a new foundation, not patching over the damage.
  • Partial honesty is the biggest obstacle. Bring the whole truth while you have help in the room.

Why do church couples wait so long to get help?

In the video, Hasani talks with Couples Academy practitioner Roland Bradley about infidelity in the church. Roland says nearly every church couple who comes to him has been living with the problem for a long time. The betrayed spouse protected the other’s reputation, the family’s image and the ministry, until they couldn’t carry it anymore.

Many feel they can’t go to their church, their colleagues or their friends, because the news could spread or they would be judged. So they suffer in silence. You don’t have to.

What should a Christian couple look for in an intensive?

  • A safe, confidential space. Roland starts every first conversation by telling the couple this is a safe space. Without that, people hold back, and the time is wasted.
  • No judgment. Leaders, pastors and long-married couples need help without ridicule or “you should have known better.”
  • Faith respected, not preached. As Roland puts it, couples coming from church often don’t want another sermon. They want someone who shares their values, cares, and can actually help.
  • A specialist in infidelity. General marriage help can leave the affair itself unaddressed. Ask how much of their work is with couples after betrayal.

What does recovery look like?

Roland compares it to a home inspection. A house can look beautiful, but an inspector sees the cracked foundation and the mold. Patchwork won’t hold; the couple has to rebuild the marriage on a new foundation they choose together.

  1. Where are you now? Some couples are on the verge of divorce; others are willing to give it one more try.
  2. How did you get here? Infidelity isn’t always sexual. It can be emotional or financial, or any breach of trust.
  3. Healing for each of you. Both partners are hurt, in different ways, and each needs their own path.
  4. A new blueprint. Decide together what you want the marriage to look like now, for yourselves, your children and the legacy you leave.

What about relationships that start in ministry?

Serving together for hours, for years, builds closeness. Hasani and Roland describe how what feels like an appropriate, platonic connection can turn into chemistry and then an affair. Clear boundaries in ministry relationships protect both the marriage and the ministry. Read why boundaries matter in recovery.

Why is full honesty so hard, and so important?

Roland finds the hardest part is that couples want help but give only enough of the truth to get through. What they hold back comes out later, after the help is gone. Hasani describes couples who arrive polished and polite while they are falling apart in private. Bring the whole truth into the room; that is what the time is for.

How does a Couples Academy intensive work for couples of faith?

Hasani and Danielle trained as marriage and family coaches through the Adventist church, and we work with couples of every faith tradition, and none. Our Private Marriage Intensive is one couple at a time, three to five days, eight to twelve hours a day, and confidential. It is relationship coaching, not licensed therapy. Read what a marriage intensive is to see how the days are structured.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Christian marriage intensive after infidelity?

Yes. Several providers offer faith-based or faith-respecting intensives. Couples Academy works with Christian couples, and couples of every faith or none, in private, confidential intensives of three to five days.

Will the intensive be a Bible study?

Not with us. We respect your faith and can bring it into the conversation, but the work focuses on the affair, each partner’s healing and rebuilding the marriage, not on preaching.

We’re in ministry. Will this stay confidential?

Confidentiality is the starting point. Every intensive is private, one couple at a time, and we make clear from the first conversation that it is a safe space.

Can a pastor’s marriage recover after an affair?

Many couples in ministry choose to rebuild. Recovery takes full honesty, healing for both partners and a new foundation for the marriage. No one can promise the outcome, but you don’t have to do it alone.

Do you only work with Christians?

No. We work with couples of every faith tradition, and with couples who have none.
